Everything for 9.99

Photo: Michal Korta Sienkiewicz’’s Teutonic Knights spoke the Goral dialect. The writer apparently shared the perception of his contemporaries of the Gorals as the ethnically purest Poles, their dialect and culture having preserved a kind of intact ur-Polishness. Nobody really cared that they are partially descended from nomadic shepherds from the Balkans, from the Carpathian mountains of Romania. It is quite possible that this fact was not widely known at the time. Not least not among the Gorals. All their exotic sounding words are more likely to be derived from the Romanian, or perhaps even Italian, but nobody would admit […]

Who’’s the Deviant Here?

Photo: Roman Vondrouš / ČTK In expressing the ambition to be the voice of the bottom ten million of the unprivileged in his inaugural speech, Miloš Zeman has provided a classic demonstration of an artificial split sought by all politicians of a populist bent, who like to divide society into the virtuous, uncorrupted pure people on the one hand and the corrupt elites on the other. The latter have been variously described as dinosaurs ([journalist and current Chairman of the Czech party Public Affairs Party] Radek John), thieves (Igor Matovič, Chairman of Ordinary People, a Slovak political party), or a […]

I’’m lying back reflecting

I’’m lying back reflecting on Slovakia’s President. Are you illiterate or what? he recently asked his citizens, addressing us all but especially those of us who hadn’‘t voted for him. His question was directed at a journalist who had inquired why he hadn’’t appointed the Procurator General elected by parliament. Well, with a question like that, she was clearly asking for it! It’’s quite obvious why he hadn’’t signed the appointment: because he doesn’’t have to. Nobody can force him to carry out his constitutional duty or follow the Constitutional Court’’s decision. He slapped the citizens in the face […]
